Dr Belal Alabbas

Historian of Early Islam

Dr Belal Alabbas

Dr Belal Alabbas is a scholar of Islamic intellectual history, with particular expertise in the formative and classical periods of Islam (7th–15th centuries). His research explores the development, transmission and interpretation of the hadith corpus, as well as broader questions of hermeneutics and the evolution of Islamic legal theory. He is especially interested in how early Muslim scholars understood authoritative texts and how their interpretive methods shaped Islamic law across different regions and intellectual traditions.

He received his undergraduate training in religious studies at Al-Azhar University, one of the most prestigious centres of Islamic learning, where he developed a strong foundation in Islamic and religious studies. He later pursued doctoral studies at the University of Oxford, completing a DPhil in the History of the Islamicate World.

Dr Alabbas has held academic appointments at several leading UK institutions, including lectureships at the University of Nottingham and the University of Bristol. He was also awarded a British Academy International Fellowship, which he held at the University of Exeter, where he continued to advance his research and collaborate with scholars working on Islamic history and thought.

His work contributes to a deeper understanding of how Islamic intellectual traditions were formed, debated and transmitted, offering insights that are relevant not only to historians of Islam but also to scholars interested in law, religion, and the dynamics of textual interpretation more broadly. He has successfully managed research projects on early Islamic debates on hadith and hermeneutical traditions. These projects have resulted in publications that analyse competing approaches to hadith and hermeneutics across Muslim intellectual traditions. He has also recently published a monograph on al-Bukhārī (d. 870), widely regarded as the most influential hadith scholar in Islamic history.

Beyond his research, Dr Alabbas has organised numerous conferences and delivered presentations at leading institutions on hadith, hermeneutics and legal authority. Since 2017, he has convened international events that bring scholars together to share methods for studying early Islamic sources.
